The 2027 Web platform Interop proposals window recently closed, and the Firefox team has launched a website to allow us to rank the proposals, and influence what should make it into Interop 2027.
I find it really interesting to see the varied responses people have to these surveys. Some of the proposals are aimed at specific, well established limitations, while others offer potential to do stuff we didn't realise we wanted to do. Getting a glimpse into developers priorities can highlight the kinds of challenges they are, or are not regularly coming up against.
With that in mind, here are my top 10 most wanted features:
- Allow CSS transitioning/animating
displayandcontent-visibility. Useful for delayingdisplay: noneuntil an exit animation completes. - CSS
interpolate-sizeproperty andcalc-size()function. Allows animating toheight: auto, and using intrinsic sizes in calculations. - Responsive iframes. The
frame-sizingCSS property sizes an<iframe>to its content, avoiding scrolling within the iframe. - CSS
flex-wrap: balance. Distributes items in a multi-line flex container so each line has about the same number of items. - Web app installation via
<install>andnavigator.install(). Prompts the user to install a progressive web app. - CSS
random()function. Chooses a random numeric value within a specified range. - CSS
margin-trim. Removes the margins of child elements when they meet the edges of the container. - CSS linked parameters. Allows passing custom properties into external SVG resources, such as colors.
- CSS
var()in size container queries. Such as@container (width >= var(--min-width)). - CSS gap decorations.
